Ms. Vumbaco’s class at Pinewood held their end-of-year showcase entitled, “Survivor Pinewood,” on Tuesday, May 24.

Ms. Vumbaco’s students presented facts related to the life cycle, animal adaption, the food chain, the water cycle, weather and severe storms, community resources and safety, and Harriet Tubman.  In addition, student work samples, art projects, and written assignments were displayed throughout the room.

The students took great pride in sharing their expertise on each of these topics.  At the front of the room, a slideshow continuously played pictures of the students’ social and academic experiences throughout the year.

Congratulations to the students for their hard work and excellent presentations!

Draper’s sixth graders got a glimpse of life in the Middle Ages during Medieval Day in May.

Medieval Day is the culminating activity for the Grade 6 Middle Ages unit.  During the month of May, students learned about life in the Middle Ages and conducted a research project in their social studies and ELA classes.  Many students wore medieval costumes, which demonstrated their knowledge of the caste system, and prizes were awarded for exceptional handmade costumes.

As part of Medieval Day, students experienced a jousting demonstration, weapons display, a blacksmith and a knighting ceremony, as well as various foods of the time period.

Mohonasen 8th graders express thanks to CTE students

Thanks_picMore than two-dozen thank you cards arrived in the mail at Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) center on June 1 for a pair of students who guided eighth grade students through the career options that exist in the world of fashion.

But more important than the “thanks” the letters conveyed were the words of inspiration from the students, many of whom said they plan to pursue careers in the industry thanks to the presentation by CTE students Shadeh Din and Mary Lange.

“Before hearing you speak, I wasn’t really interested in fashion design, But I learned that I could be taught and inspired in the fashion industry,” wrote Draper Middle School eighth grade student Ashley P.

“I really liked the (fashion) presentation … and  I am totally doing the BOCES program in high school,” added fellow student Maria P.

“I have always been very interested in the fashion world and your presentation taught so much more about fashion, I will totally be considering going to college for fashion,” Shannon S. wrote.

Din, an adult student at CTE, and Lange, a senior from Mohonasen, spoke to the Draper Middle School students in March about the world of fashion and the jobs that exist. The presentation was part of the school’s career day, which Mohonasen conducted at Schenectady County Community College, CTE fashion teacher Judi Hicks said.

Hicks said that the career day presentation has led to many students choosing her CTE program, including Lange.

But the sheer volume of thank yous — 27 in all — and potential new students as a result of this year’s presentation is a record.

“I was really amazed when I started looking through the mail yesterday,” said Hicks.

Seniors visit Draper, Pinewood and Bradt to reconnect and inspire

On the morning of Wednesday, June 15, senior students from Mohonasen High School embarked on a new tradition. They put on the caps and gowns that they will once again don next Saturday for their graduation ceremony and set out to their former stomping grounds: Draper Middle School, Pinewood Intermediate School and Bradt Primary School.

At each school, the seniors took a walk down the hallways where teachers and their younger peers lined the walls and watched on with anticipation. When the seniors arrived, they were greeted with enthusiastic cheers, high-fives and hugs as they took time to revisit old memories, say hello to former teachers and inspire future generations of Mohonasen graduates. This symbolic event serves as an opportunity to show the younger students what their hard work will one day bring.

Commencement for the Class of 2016 will take place next Saturday, June 25 at 2 p.m. at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady.
