Notice to the Mohonasen Community: Extracurricular activities are cancelled for today, Feb. 1. Tuesday, Feb 2, will be remote-only learning and instruction for students and faculty. Please see the following message from Superintendent Shannon Shine for additional information, including an update on winter athletics.

Dear Parents, Faculty and Staff,

As a follow up to my text message earlier this morning, all after-school activities and events are cancelled today, Monday, February 1st. Food pick ups this afternoon are still happening.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2nd, will be a virtual snow day, also known as a fully remote day, for students.

Food Pick Up

Food pick up for remote learners will still be today from 2:30 – 3:30 in front of the High School Auditorium. Due to the remote learning day tomorrow there will be no food pick up tomorrow. Any families who had planned to come tomorrow for food pick up are welcome to come today.

School Lunch

The elementary menu will move Chicken Ranch Wrap to Wednesday and then the rest of the week will remain as originally planned. Draper & HS will serve General Tso’s Chicken Wrap on Wednesday as originally planned.

Employee Work Schedules for Tomorrow

If you are an employee who is not a teacher and are not sure how this affects your schedule tomorrow, please check with your supervisor. Mr. Ruberti will also be sending a reminder email out to all supervisors regarding work schedules for different groups of employees tomorrow. However, tomorrow will be treated like a traditional “snow day” for non-instructional staff.

WINTER ATHLETICS

When I last updated parents and faculty and staff I shared that while winter athletics were given the go ahead by the Governor and the NYSDOH, this was contingent upon approval by local departments of health. The Schenectady County Department of Health subsequently issued its guidelines for athletics, but we have not yet met all their requirements, one of which involves the positivity rate of COVID-19 within the county. As of Friday, Schenectady’s seven-day average COVID positivity rate was above 5%, well above the 4% or less metric from the Schenectady DOH needed to conduct “high-risk” winter athletics. As of today that stands at 4.1% and continues a downward trend. I believe it is likely that we will be at or under the 4% threshold by tomorrow. There are a number of other safety measures and requirements which were outlined by the Schenectady County Department of Health which need to be achieved as well. One item is to have approval of sport specific safety plans from our District Physician. We have forwarded him our plans earlier today and have a phone meeting with him tomorrow. If the community positivity rate continues to decline and puts us in the acceptable range, and if we can continue to meet the other requirements from the Schenectady County Department of Health, we may soon be able to begin winter “high-risk” athletics. I will keep you posted regarding this.

Yours in Service,

Shannon Shine

Superintendent
