We hope everyone is having a safe and healthy summer. During this time our staff is working hard to ensure every student has the proper tools to succeed this coming school year. Please read the following information regarding your student’s school supplies.

Realizing that almost half of Mohonasen families are economically disadvantaged according to measures determined by the NYS Department of Education, Mohonasen will supply students with all their basic school supplies beginning in September.  At some grade levels there may be exceptions to this, such as with backpacks and lunchboxes.

If your family is experiencing hardship in regards to paying for such items, please let your teacher, guidance counselor, or principal know as we have limited supplies of such items we can provide to students in need. Also, for families who wish to supply their own school supplies, this remains an option.  If this is the case please ensure you contact your child’s teacher to ensure you get the supplies needed for a particular grade level or a particular class.  Together we will continue to ensure that all Mohonasen students will receive what they need in order to access a great education.

We are excited to announce that Mohonasen has been awarded the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s (NYSPHSAA) School of Excellence Award.

To earn this distinction, 75% of a school’s varsity teams must qualify and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award. According to NYSPHSAA, the purpose of the School of Excellence Awards is to unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide honor.

“The School of Excellence and School of Distinction Awards highlight the best student-athletes in New York State”, said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “For 234 member schools to be honored for their commitment to academics as well as athletics is a testament to the outstanding leadership and student-athletes we have in this state.”

Mohonasen Superintendent Shannon Shine expressed his enthusiasm regarding NYSPHSAA’s recognition, saying, “Mohonasen’s athletes are a continuing source of district pride and NYSPHSAA’s formal designation only underscores the quality of our student-athletes.”

The School of Excellence winners will be awarded a plaque at their local athletic director workshop.

The full list of School of Excellence Award winners is below: https://nysphsaa.org/news/2022/8/3/general-nysphsaa-announces-school-of-distinction-and-school-of-excellence-winners-for-2021-22.aspx

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

I hope that all of our students are enjoying a restful and relaxing summer! Personally, I have loved the heat wave, since we get to see so little of the sun throughout the year. When I’m not outside, I’m here at school with our team, working hard to be ready for what is sure to be a fun and exciting school year. We have been very busy here at the high school getting ready for the return of our students, and I have a bunch of updates to share with you. I’m sure this list is not all-inclusive, and I will share more information as it becomes available. Stay well, enjoy what’s left of the summer, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Best,

Mr. Chandler

Mohonasen BOE appoints Matthew Ronca as Director of PE, Athletics and Health Education

$

Matthew RoncaOn August 15, the Mohonasen Board of Education approved the appointment of Matthew Ronca as the new Mohonasen Director of PE, Athletics and Health Education.

Ronca will be transitioning to his new role for the start of the 2022-2023 school year and will provide leadership and vision in the ongoing planning, implementation, development, direction and evaluation of the district’s physical education and athletics programs.

Ronca, a Mohonasen graduate, began his educational career teaching at Cobleskill-Richmondville where he taught health and physical education. In addition, he coached football, wrestling and softball, eventually becoming the Cobleskill-Richmondville Athletic Director. Ronca then transitioned to Schalmont where he was the Director of Health, PE and Athletics before taking the position of Assistant Director of Health and PE at Schenectady City Schools.

With the appointment of Ronca, Superintendent Shannon Shine is certain the future of Mohonasen Athletics is bright.  “I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that we have seen high turnover in the AD position at Mohonasen over the past number of years, but I believe that time is now over. In keeping with our District goals for long term planning, Matt was specifically hired to bring long term stability to the position, something which will only benefit our student athletes and our athletic programs.”

Ronca earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland and a master’s degree in health education from SAGE Graduate School. Additionally, he holds an advanced master’s degree in educational leadership from Stonybrook University.

A lifelong resident of Rotterdam, Ronca is looking forward to beginning his career at Mohonasen. “I was so happy when I got the job offer, I just couldn’t believe it. I had such a great experience as a student athlete here and to be the Athletic Director at my old high school is just a dream opportunity.” He continues, “I am looking forward to meeting new people and learning how the district operates. I have truly missed athletics so I am looking forward to supporting our coaches and athletes as they compete.”

COVID-19 updates for the 2022-23 school year

$

0

The latest guidance and recommendations from the New York State Department of Health regarding COVID-19 may be found here, “What Parents/Caregivers Should Know about COVID Mitigation Strategies for the 2022-2023 School Year” (August 2022).

Illness/positive COVID test

As with any infectious illness, students and staff who test positive for COVID-19, or who show symptoms, are asked to stay home from school and it is recommended they follow the Centers for Disease Control’s Isolation Guidance.

  • Someone who tested positive and has no symptoms may return to school after day 5.
  • Someone who is sick (has symptoms) may return to school after day 5 if they have been fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) and symptoms are improving.

It is recommended that people who have been sick, or tested positive, should wear a mask through day 10.

Testing

Testing is recommended for people with symptoms of COVID-19 as soon as possible after symptoms begin. We do not offer testing at school, but we do have COVID test kits available to families free of charge.

At-home test kits

Mohonasen Central School District provides at-home COVID-19 test kits for students. If you need a home COVID test, please contact your child’s school as we have test kits available for families.

COVID-19 vaccination

COVID-19 vaccinations are not required to attend school and Mohonasen does not have a position regarding whether or not students should receive a COVID-19 vaccination. Children ages 6 months and older are all eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine if parents wish them to. Children older than 5 are eligible for a booster. For more information you may visit ny.gov/vaxtoschool

Masks

Any student or staff member may wear a mask while at school to prevent the spread of illness. Mask-wearing is recommended by the CDC and the NYSDOH for at least 10 days following a positive COVID test, or COVID illness.

Health and safety protocols

Routine cleaning in our school buildings continues to be an important strategy for reducing the spread of illness. High-risk areas such as health offices, classrooms, lunchrooms, athletic rooms, bathrooms and high-traffic areas are cleaned frequently. High-touch surfaces such as lunch tables, desks, chairs, light switches and handrails are also routinely cleaned.

Message from Mr. Chandler: High school school supplies and first day expectations

$

Dear Mohonasen families,

I am so excited to share that, as you probably already know, we will be providing all of our high school students with basic school supplies to start them on the path to success. On the first day of school, in homeroom, each student will receive:

  • 1 agenda book
  • 2, 3 Ring Binders
  • 2 packages of loose leaf paper
  • 1 package of binder dividers
  • 2 spiral bound notebooks
  • 4 pocket folders
  • 1 package of index cards
  • 1 composition notebook
  • 1 package of pens
  • 1 package of pencils
  • 1 package of colored pencils
  • 1 pencil sharpener
  • 1 eraser
  • 2 highlighters
  • 2 packages of Post It notes
  • 1 pair of earbuds
  • 1 wired mouse

All of this will come in a reusable bag. As students begin their classes, and teachers share what students need for their particular class, students can mark these supplies for those particular needs. In some cases, one or two items may need to be purchased.

On September 7, when students enter the building, their homerooms will be posted in the main lobby, the library lobby, the art lobby and the gym lobby. Homeroom will be extended on the first two days of school so that we can distribute supplies, chromebooks for 9th graders and the most up-to-date schedules to all.

Enjoy what’s left of summer, and we will see you on September 7!

Over the summer, Mohonasen fifth grade teacher Lisa Smith published her first book, “Phoebe Jean, Warrior Queen”. According to Smith, the children’s book is loosely based on her daughter Maggie. “Phoebe Jean, Warrior Queen” is about a girl who discovers that when she uses her voice to speak up for positive change, she becomes a superhero. The book has already gained quite the following. Smith has been asked to speak at several schools, both local and outside the Capital Region.

“Phoebe Jean, Warrior Queen” is available on Amazon in paperback and for eReaders. Smith hopes to continue writing children’s books in the future, including a book with a character based around her son Tommy.
