Congratulations to Brendan Dunleavy (Lacrosse), Sara Toukatly (Softball), Eric Starr (Baseball) and Ben Parker (Basketball). They are Mohonasen’s most recent WOW (Warrior of the Week) award winners. Each week, the Athletics Department selects two student-athletes (modified, JV or varsity level) for WOW awards based on accomplishments that include:
  • A significant impact to a contest in the week prior to selection; or…

  • Demonstration of excellent leadership, sportsmanship, noticeable improvement/effort, or community or public service

Warriors of the Week – April 29

Brendan Dunleavy

On April 30th against Lansingburgh, Brendan scored a goal and recorded five assists. The Schenectady-Mohonasen boys varsity lacrosse team would go on to win that game by the score of 18 to 5 to record their first win since becoming a merged lacrosse program. Aside from having a hand in 1/3 of his team’s goals, Brendan also had multiple ground balls and clears. Well done, Brendan!

Sara Toukatly

Sara had an excellent week last week. In three games, she collected six hits and drove in three runs.  She was also a dominant pitcher for her team. Against Cobleskill-Richmondville, she fired a no-hitter! In that game, she struck out 13 of the 17 batters that she faced. Congratulations, Sara!

Warriors of the Week – April 15-26

Eric Starr

Eric plays on the varsity baseball team but is not physically able to play for the remainder of the season. However, Eric has continued to help serve his team.  He has remained one of the first players to arrive to practice and one of the last to leave. With his arm in a sling, he is retrieving foul balls, spotting the pitcher and catcher in between innings and picking up his teammates when he can. He is also the main reason the team took on Ben Parker as their manager this season. Eric has taken Ben under his wing and helped make him feel part of the team.

Ben Parker

Ben is a member of Mohon’s unified basketball team. In the first game of the season against Fort Plain, Ben scored 11 points, played excellent defense and was at his greatest when his greatest was needed. The team beat Fort Plain, 51-36.  He also makes time to serve as an assistant manager to the varsity baseball team. He even got to throw out the first pitch at a game earlier this season. We are proud of you, Ben!

Warriors of the Week – April 8

Matti Muller

Matti earned two victories on the mound over league opponents, Ichabod Crane and Schalmont, only surrendering one earned run in both games combined.  She also contributed offensively. She hit two doubles and drove in four runs in the victory. This past weekend, the team competed in the Scotia tournament, where Matti earned another win on the mound.
Elijah Harris

Elijah won the high jump in last Tuesday’s league meet against Schalmont and Cobleskill.  Then, at the Niskayuna Warrior Classic, Elijah won the high jump with a personal best 6’4″.  This was also a meet record for the invitational. He beat the next closest competitor by six inches and automatically qualified for the New York State Championship in June.

Warriors of the Week – April 1

Natalia Sawyer

Natalia won the 200 m and 400 m dash in Mohonasen’s Colonial Council opener on Tuesday, April 2nd.  On Saturday, April 6th the girls track team competed at the New Paltz Invitational where Natalia won the 400 m dash over 54 other competitors!  In doing so, she broke the school record for the 400 meters.  In addition to winning this event, Natalia was on the 400 m relay team that won 1st place and the 1600 m relay team that placed 2nd.  All in all, Natalia contributed 28 points at the invitational for her team.
Jonathan Caffarella

In Mohonasen’s league opener win at Lansingburgh, Jon had two hits and scored the go-ahead run for his team.  Jon also contributed on defense.  Jon struck out 8 batters in three innings to record the save after entering the game with the bases loaded in the 5th inning. Jon’s coaches note that he leads by example. He never complains and gives his best effort at all times.

ROTTERDAM – Sen. George Amedore took to the front of the classroom on Thursday to talk government and lobbying with students in the Capital Region BOCES Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) West Campus.

During a nearly hour-long talk with the high school freshmen, Amedore spoke about his decision to enter the world of politics 12 years ago after building a successful construction company, his job as a senator and his job when he was in the assembly, as well as what area he represents and why it’s important for constituents to communicate with elected officials.

George Amedore speaks to students at the CAT building. George Amedore speaks to students at the CAT building.

“P-TECH programs are such a great opportunity for our students to get a three-dimensional learning experience that provides them with practical, real-world experience. I enjoyed my visit with 9th grade P-TECH students at Mohonasen’s CAT Center, where we had a lively and energetic discussion about the importance of our young people being involved in their community, and engaged with their elected officials,” Amedore said following the visit.

The students in the first-year Capital Region BOCES program will be sending letters to the elected officials as part of a wide-ranging project that examines everything from scientific issues – ocean pollution and plastics – to social justice topics, said Principal Makensie Bullinger.

Using advice Amedore gave, the students will make impassioned pleas to their elected officials about their individual topics. The students are also creating TED Talks on similar topics as part of the project and will post them to the internet.

“I feel that it is important to spread awareness about things that people might not usually think about.”  “You need to know how to address higher officials because if you can contact these officials then you can address these important issues that you care about,” said Liz Hess, a P-TECH student from Schalmont.

P-TECH is a four- to six-year program (grades 9-14) offered to students throughout the region through a consortium that includes Capital Region BOCES, the Capital Region Chamber, Hudson Valley Community College and SUNY Schenectady County Community College.

The program’s two campuses – East Campus is at Watervliet High School, West Campus at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen – provides pathways for students to earn free college degrees in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems and Cybersecurity.

The P-TECH curriculum focuses on engaging students in hands-on, project-based learning – such as coding – to be successful in careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and providing students with workplace skills that will ensure success, no matter the career path they are applied to. Through the program, business partners provide students access to cutting-edge technologies and innovations that allow them to see the real-world application of the knowledge they are gaining at P-TECH.

Below is a letter from Superintendent Shannon Shine. View the printed letter here.

“Dear Parents, Teachers and Staff,

It is with a heavy heart I write to inform you of the untimely death of a Draper eighth-grade student Jonathan Johnson.

The Crisis Team has been activated to provide support for students and staff. We have guidance counselors, social workers and grief counselors, in addition to teachers and administrators, assisting and counseling students and staff regarding this tragic situation. We will maintain additional counseling staff for as long as needed.

Should you be aware of any student or adult in need, please contact the school via any staff member so we can follow up accordingly. You may also reach the Draper Main Office at 518-356-8350 and the school principal, Mr. Richard Arket, can be reached directly at rarket@mohonasen.org.

As news is quickly spreading via electronic communication and word of mouth, all Draper students will be directly apprised of Jonathan’s passing during student lunch periods today by Principal Arket. Eighth-grade lunch is at 10:30 a.m., seventh-grade is at 11:20 a.m. and sixth-grade is at noon.

This news will be shocking and troubling for some students. Although we will maintain counseling supports on site for as many days and weeks as needed, it is also important that parents and guardians further support children for whom this is particularly impactful. Should you need further information regarding how to best support your child, the following resources may be helpful to you.

At this time, funeral service details are unknown and we are unaware of whether the services will be private or open to the public. If the services are open to the public, I will forward that information to you as soon as it becomes available.

I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to everyone who is helping students and staff navigate this exceptionally challenging situation. Times such as these highlight the love and compassion we have for our students and for each other. May peace and solace be ever present during this time of grief.

In Sadness,

Shannon Shine

Deborah Escobar’s opening statement

The following is Deborah Escobar’s prepared opening statement that she read at the Meet the Candidates Night on Monday, May 13.

“Thank you for this opportunity to talk to you about why I am running for re-election to the Mohonasen school board.

When I first ran three years ago, I did so because I knew that public education was under attack. Hedgefund investors were using their money and influence to attack public schools in an attempt to privatize education. They pushed reforms like standardized testing in an effort to label public schools, teachers, and students as failures. This is why I became an education activist in 2014. While I feel that my background has been helpful to the Mohonasen community, unfortunately things have not improved over the last three years.

Although minimal changes have taken place, test scores are still based on inflated benchmarks that are not developmentally appropriate, falsely labeling large numbers of our students as not proficient. For example, only 24% of eighth grade students were marked proficient on the 2016 State math test, yet 74% of the same cohort passed the Algebra 1 Regents exam a year later. For a data-driven education movement, they pay little attention to the glaring facts that tell us standardized testing has been a failure.

This year, even though the State Education Department and Regents declared that parents are allowed to opt-out, they doubled down when they scored opt-outs as zeroes for placing schools on the ESSA accountability list, and made the majority of criteria for the list dependent on state test scores. This unfairly penalized schools like our own Draper Middle School. I say this to our Governor, legislators, Commissioner Elia, and Regents. Our children are not political pawns. Though all schools can, and should, improve, it is unethical to skew unreliable testing results in order to label a school a failure. I am Mohon Proud and our schools are quality schools, as evidenced by our high graduation rate.

This year we did not receive enough foundation aid from the state to meet our budget. Stuck between a tax cap that has now become permanent, and a Governor who refuses to acknowledge the need and importance of adequate school funding, we had to make some heart wrenching decisions and let valuable people go. We may have lost the battle this year, but we must continue the fight to make sure that our students receive what they deserve in the way of foundation aid, and that legislators help us find answers for the problems of high health insurance and rising prescription costs. I ask for your vote to keep me in that fight.

I would also like to say that I am honored to run alongside Chad McFarland, who proved his worth to the school board in a previous term, and I hope to work with him once again. Thank you.”

Assemblyman Santabarbara to Host Arrive Alive Prom Pledge Signing at Mohonasen High School

Students Pledge NOT to Drink and Drive, Parents Promise to Give a Ride Home Anytime – No Questions Asked

Ahead of this year’s prom, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara is hosting a special event to talk to teens about the consequences of drinking and driving. Students will assemble in the high school auditorium to sign Santabarbara’s Arrive Alive pledge — teens to make a promise not to drink and drive or ride with anyone who has done so and parents to promise to give a ride home at any time, no questions asked. The Arrive Alive Pledge has been made available to high school students in the Albany, Montgomery and Schenectady County school districts represented by Assemblyman Santabarbara.

“One life lost to drunk driving is one too many, especially since drinking and driving accidents are completely preventable,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “That’s why I’ve partnered with the schools in my district, like Mohonasen, to encourage teens and their parents to take the Arrive Alive pledge. Prom should always be about having fun and celebrating the end of a successful school year – it should never end in tragedy.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 5 teen drivers involved in a car crash had alcohol in their system. Further, young drivers between the ages of 16 and 20 are 17 times more likely to die in a car crash when they’ve been drinking and had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over .08 percent. However, even at a lower BAC, judgment and ability is impaired, which can lead to potentially devastating consequences.

Bradt’s Finn gets a new mailbox!

High school students worked on designing and building a new mailbox for Finn, a therapy dog that visits Bradt Primary every week!

High school students hold mailbox they designed and created for Finn at Bradt.

Finn is an Australian Cattle-dog mix and attends Bradt two times a week and goes to four or five classes each day with Erin. Finn also helps work with smaller groups of students and sometimes the children read stories to him.

Finn has his own mailbox where the students write to him and send him pictures.

Business Advisory Board encourages school district/business collaboration

As a junior, Chris Cowell chose to explore the field of education, as recommended by his sisters.

He completed two elementary internships, which he enjoyed, but ultimately decided to shift his career path to studying criminal justice in college.

“I am thankful I had the chance to experience the field of education,” Cowell said. “I now have a clearer sense of my future career goals as a result of this valuable experience.”

Connecting students like Chris to local businesses – both to encourage the opportunity to try out an industry before college, and to get feedback from employers about what skills Mohonasen students need to strengthen — is exactly what the Mohonasen Business Advisory Board is trying to achieve. The goal is to create a space where the school district and local businesses can collaborate to help ensure that students experience positive career and workforce readiness.

View photos from the meeting on Facebook here.

“We want to know what you know,” Community Business Coordinator Graham Macbeth told a room of area businesses and organizations who attended a May 14 Business Advisory Board meeting. “We want your expertise. We want to know what skills are required in your offices that our students need.”

In attendance that day were representatives from several Mohonasen departments including Special Education, Science and Technology, the Counseling Office, the Center for Advanced Technology and some students. There were also representatives from Schenectady ARC, local rental offices, First New York Federal Credit Union, local hair salons, MiSci, SUNY Schenectady, Capital Region Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, Schenectady County, Price Chopper, plumber and carpenter unions, General Electric, Saratoga National and more.

“Our business partners play an important role in helping students find their path and nurture their career skills,” Sue Petrosino said at the meeting. Ms. Petrosino is the other community business coordinator of the Mohonasen Business Advisory Board. “Together we are developing tomorrow’s workforce.”

Barbara Kessler of Price Chopper and Mark Vermilyea of General Electric both shared their thoughts about career development.

The next Advisory Board meeting dates are Tuesday, Oct. 8, Tuesday, Jan. 14 and Tuesday, May 5. The meetings are from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Center for Advanced Technology.

If you have any questions or want to get involved, contact Ms. Petrosino at spetrosino@mohonasen.org or 518-356-8345.

Mohonasen residents approved the district’s 2019-20 school budget with 771 yes votes and 360 no votes, a margin of 68 percent.

Voters also approved a proposition to purchase four full-size, 72-passenger buses and two 33-passenger buses. A total of 818 voted in favor and 308 voted against, a margin of 72 percent.

Residents elected incumbent Deborah Escobar (667 votes) and Chad McFarland (720 votes), who had previously served on the Board of Education. Candidates ran at-large and were elected to unpaid, three-year terms that begin on July 1.

“This was a challenging budget to develop,” said Superintendent Shannon Shine. “Throughout the process, we listened to the community. Despite difficult decisions to reduce expenditures through staffing reductions, we were able to preserve all programs for students.  The community demonstrated that they have been heard and the results are evident tonight. We appreciate everyone who came out to vote today and are encouraged by the community’s continued support of our schools.”

The Mohonasen High School Jazz Ensemble was one of three area high school jazz bands to be invited to perform for Chuck Mangione at a concert being given in his honor.

Born in Rochester, NY, Chuck Mangione is an American composer, trumpeter and flugelhorn player who achieved international success in 1977 with his jazz-pop single “Feels So Good.” He has released over 30 albums since 1960.

The Mohonasen HS Jazz Ensemble will be performing “Bellavia,” by Chuck Mangione, “Night and Day,” by Cole Porter, arr. by Mark Taylor, and ‘A Quiet Heart,” by Pete McGuinness.  Several soloists within the ensemble will be featured at this concert.  Additionally, the Mohonasen students will have the opportunity to meet and speak with Chuck Mangione at this prestigious event.  Other ensembles that will be performing include the Schuylerville High School Jazz Ensemble, The Saratoga Springs High School Jazz Ensemble and the Avante Garde Drum Corps.

The concert will be held at Lake Avenue Elementary School (126 Lake Avenue) in Saratoga Springs at 7:00 PM on Friday, June 7, and is open to the public.  Tickets are available at https://avantgardealumni.com/

Congratulations to the members of the group for this honor!  We hope that you will consider attending this concert that evening in support of our students.
