More Mohonasen students with disabilities will be able to exit high school with work readiness skills thanks to a New York State Department of Education grant.

The district this week received notification it has won a three-year, $648,353 grant to allow more students with disabilities to participate in career and technical education (CTE) programs and work-based learning opportunities.

“Mohonasen currently offers work-based learning for a limited number of students with disabilities,” said Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Spring. “We are excited to expand our programs and give more students the chance to immerse themselves in CTE classes and real-life work experiences.”

Through the grant, the district will incorporate several components – including career planning, career exploration, self-directed goal-setting and community internships – into existing CTE and other vocational/technical opportunities.

“The grant will also help us ensure more students are on track for a Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Credential,” said Spring.

The CDOS Credential, along with the Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential (SACC) certificate, was first awarded to students in the 2013-14 school year as the state phased out Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Diplomas and Regents Competency Tests. The new certifications favor pathways that emphasize real-world skills and experiences to help students be successful in their lives after school, based on their individual needs and goals.

CDOS can supplement a high school diploma or be earned by students who do not complete diploma requirements due to their disability.
