The Professional Development Day on Friday, March 25, showcased the ability of Mohonasen educators K-12 to join together to support students and each other in new and exciting ways.

The vast majority of the 25 professional workshops offered over two sessions were led by Mohonasen educators. Workshops fell into four overarching categories: Instructional Practice, Instructional Technology, Climate and Culture, and Wellness. There were sessions on podcasting, video and many other types of classroom technology, student engagement, student and educator wellness, classroom management, and more.

Nationally known educator, author and motivational speaker Dr. Brad Johnson traveled to Mohonasen from Georgia to kick off the day with an inspirational and empowering keynote.

The day was planned by the district’s Professional Development Committee, a team of 17 teachers and staff members led by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Laurel Logan-King. The committee’s goal was to design a day that fosters a community of practice at Mohonasen, where teachers can ask questions and learn from one another through the exchange of new tools, strategies, and activities.

In welcoming remarks, Logan-King and Superintendent Shannon Shine said how nice it was to be together in-person after the last two years and applauded all involved for putting together a staff development day that they believe rivals and surpasses offerings at other districts.

In his remarks, Dr. Johnson encouraged teachers to appreciate the strengths that they bring to the classroom every day. He reminded them that learning starts with the relationship that they build with their students and each other.

“You are amazing exactly how you are. You are exactly what your students need,” Dr. Johnson said. “If you just bring your best every day, that’s all. You don’t need to be perfect, you don’t need to be like anyone else. Just bring your best and that will be enough.”
