Dear Mohonasen Parents,
Earlier today Governor Cuomo announced the closing of all school districts in New York State starting (and including) Wednesday, March 18th and extending through (and including) Wednesday, April 1st. We will also be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17th. This means that all Mohonasen schools are closed through and including Wednesday, April 1st.
The District will provide meals to any in-District students in need starting on Tuesday, March 17th in a “grab and go” manner. Parents may sign up for grab and go meals at the following link, https://forms.gle/B2JKyfy1F9YVGEk4A. The food pick up location for students from all schools is the High School Auditorium Lobby from 9:30am – 11:30am on Tuesday and Thursdays of each week, starting tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17th. Each family will be able to pick up 4 meals per student on each day (breakfast and lunch for 2 days). For those families and students who participate in the Backpack Program, backpacks will be available at the Thursday meal pick up at the High School.
Teachers have prepared instructional resources for students at every level and they will be available by noon tomorrow (March 17th), separated by school and grade level, on our District Website. Many of the instructional resources available involve online platforms and resources; however, we have hard copies of many resources available as well. Recommendations for daily routines are included to provide families a framework for student success.
Please see the “Questions and Answers” section below for more details regarding many aspects of this unique situation. Thank you for rallying together to support our students and our community. I am humbled by the outpouring of support from our Mohonasen Family. We are in this together and we will navigate this together and we will persevere together.
Always Mohon Proud,
Shannon Shine
Superintendent
Questions and Answers
Q: Will extra curricular events (Mohon Masque “Pippen”, Prom, Family Fun Fair, etc.) still take place?
A: While school is closed there will be no after school, athletic or extracurricular activities taking place at Mohonasen. Given the Governor’s recently released guidelines regarding closing retail establishments, it is likely that future events will be cancelled or rescheduled. We will release more specific information when it becomes available.
Q: Will students be able to access materials from their classrooms or lockers?
A. Yes, but this differs by building.
Bradt and Pinewood: Students will not be permitted to go into classrooms. If you are in need of supplies, such as pencils, crayons, paper, glue these materials will be available in the main entrance daily from 7-3 PM. If you need a personal item from the classroom, please contact the main office and we will make arrangements to get that item to the main entrance for pick-up. We will also have paper packets available in the main entrance for K, 1, and 2.
Draper: Each school day from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm; otherwise by appointment
High School: Tuesday 3/17 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm; otherwise by appointment
Q: What are students and teachers doing during this school closure?
A: Today all teachers helped develop and gather instructional resources for students. Teachers will continue to offer online support for students throughout the duration of the closure. See link to website above.
Q: Can families still register new students?
A: Yes.
Q: Is the Board of Education Business meeting scheduled for March 23 going to happen?
A: The March 23rd BOE meeting will be held but will not be open to the public. The meeting will be “livestreamed” and also recorded and posted on the website the following day. The link for the livestream will be available on our website before Monday, March 23.
Q: Can a student sign up to work at a meal site?
A: No, but we are very grateful that our students would be willing to do so.
Q: How can students, parents or staff members be helpful?
A: Please adhere to the guidance found on our website. Our primary aim is to keep our community safe. Please continue to exercise social distancing and universal precautions as outlined in our previous communications. Maintain a routine with children and take full advantage of the educational resources available. If you are able, consider donating to one of the food pantries or a local organization of your choosing that is providing assistance to those in need. Above all, put your health and well-being first; stay healthy and safe.
Q: What will happen if schools are closed beyond April 1st?
A: We will continue to adhere to the guidance from the Governor’s Office, the CDC, the Department of Health and the Commissioner of Education. We will update parents, faculty and staff regularly.
Q: My question was not answered here. What should I do?
A: If you have a building specific question you may contact your building principal (all contact information is found on our website). If you have a general question please email “communications@mohonasen.org” and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.
