As we near the month of March, Pinewood Intermediate School students are continuing to read and are gearing up for some exciting events to close out their March Madness reading activities.
More than 600 students voted in the second round of the bracket-style competition, in which students vote on their most beloved books from the school’s library.
Here are the highlights from Round 2 of March Madness at Pinewood:
- With 63% of the vote, the Benjamin Franklinstein series, by Matt McElligott, won in a match against Scary Tales, by James Preller. Both authors are Pinewood visiting authors. Preller visited the school in March 2018 and Matt McElligott is scheduled to visit on March 5, 2019.
- The same two authors faced off with James Preller’s Better Off Undead beating Matt McElligott’s Mad Scientist Academy graphic novels with 58% of the vote
- Raina Telegemeiger’s graphic novels Smile, Sisters and Ghosts won with 60% of the vote over J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
- The closest and most-talked-about match was between the 13-book Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney and the 6-book Dog Man graphic novel series by Dav Pilkey. The winner was Dog Man with 56% of the vote.
Students will have time to read before the next two rounds of voting. The winner of Pinewood’s March Reading Madness will be announced on March 29, 2019.
Additional activities to promote reading have been planned by librarian Mindy Holland, literacy coach Gina Ralston and reading teachers Brianna Coughlin, Heidi DePiero and Sarah Kaiser.
The activities include:
- D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read)
- Dress as a Character Day:
- Graffiti Wall (where students recommend books to each other)
- Mystery Guest Readers in classrooms
- You’ve Been Booked (a program that sneaks books into classrooms)
Author Matt McElligott will visit Pinewood Tuesday, March 5. All students will go to a grade-level assembly with the author/illustrator. Students may also enter a contest to have lunch with Mr McElligott. Students may come back with their families in the evening for a program on writing and illustrating (registration is required). Additionally, the PTO will host a Scholastic Book Fair the week of March 4-8.
